I'm connecting the LED via a 4K7 resistor to the emitter of the second BC547C.

Shouldn't really be all that different.  It's the same challenge: softening the sudden current draw from a device.  One solution is to use a high-brightness LED and a larger value current limiting resistor.

try a 100 ohms resistor in series in 9 volts +.

Thanks, I just tried a 1n4148 in series with LED, seems to help!

the 100 ohm series resistor, plus a 1000 uF cap from V+ to ground where it enters the board, often works wonders for LFO ticking...
