i got a red mxr dyna comp from a friend knowing it didn't work and need some help troubleshooting it.

the led doesn't come on anymore, and he told me that the battery would get hot when it was plugged in.

any ideas on where to start diggin in on this one?

Indicates a direct short, the resistor/battery current flows in a direct short heat up, damage, destroy, explode batteris, set the battery aside until the short can be found and eliminated.

  In the box...
With a close in Hi intensity light and a Mag-Glass, look for anywhere _ side of the supply could be touching + side, perhaps a chunk of conductor entered the box and is touching conductive MXR stuff.
And w/ power supply debugging of this order, there is little except observation and lifting of connections [last resort] to eliminate / find the short.
Don't start a second pot of coffee without sleeping is my advice.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

ayayay!

Is this an older version with the "floating" board?  You need to make sure the solder traces aren't touching the enclosure and causing a short too.
