I have bought a copy from smallbear and I recommend it to anyone who wants to do their own layouts.
It's thorough and comprehensive, yet written in a way that you don't have to be an engineer to follow it.

An *excellent* book that is well worth the money.

The book is pretty useful and easy to read. A problem is more in choosing and using the right software that is convenient for your needs.  I mean, that if you want to practice at the same time that you read the book, a beginner will have to choose among many software and learn how to be proficient at using it.  As RG said, it's like taking fish oil at first, when you will get used to your software, everything should fall into place.
