quick EA Tremolo question

i'm building the ROG EA Trem and i'm out of 2N5088 but i have a couple of 2N5089 here in this circuit, would it make a difference?

2N5089 should be fine.

i used 2N3904 for the audio path (its not in the ROG mosfet version), they're ok.

for the oscillator part, i found that 3904 wont work properly, it saturates very early when going up the speed. 5088 were ok, so i guess any similar high gain npn will work

what is the "job" of the 5088 in there? is it just for signal boosting or it actually makes the effect?
