I've found these quite reasonably priced, actually very reasonably priced (90c each) and I'm wondering if theres much difference between the basic unit depending on the letter at the end... essentially are the A-N the same as the M?

I think the M package is the through-hole DIP that one normally wants.
The N is a 'small outline' for surface mount.
That's my reading of the data sheet, anyway.

I think that's the wrong way round Paul, I've got some DIP16 ones and they are marked LM13700N, and the National Semi datasheet I've got lists M as surface mount.

I would concur with slacker, my 16 pin DIPs are marked LM13700N too.

Thanks guys,
I have a hard enough time dealing with pins at 2.5mm spacing so I doubt if I'd be able to work with pins at 1.5mm or less though it would be a challenge. Recently I fixed my DVD remote after I stomped on it and broke a chip off the PCB. I had to de strand some stranded wire then use one piece to solder accross the gap and though it's not as tricky as pickup winding wire its not something I want to get used to. Maybe I'll get a few surface mount IC's just to play with and see how frustrated they'll make me  :icon_rolleyes:

You'd better stick to the 'N' version then Paul  :)

Cheers,
Stew.

ROFL! I actually use them both - (the Alienator uses the SMT) but the 'little' ones get put on at a factory.
