Diodes? For the ZVEX Machine? Or dual crossover distortion diodes?

Does anyone have any idea what type diodes are used in the ZVEX Machine? Are they 1n914 type or Germanium? Or better yet, what would be the ideal diodes for a dual crossover distortion?

Try 'em both, or even something else and see (er, hear) what you like best.

In Tim Escobedo's Tripple Fuzz, upon which the Machine is very likely based, he uses Si clipping diodes.  I have tweaked Tim's designs every time I build them, and I can never improve them.  So I'd imagine Si works well.

That said, the Machine is basically two Tripple Fuzzes in line, so maybe Ge diodes at the end make the pedal slightly less fuzzy.  Maybe the fuzz was too much with the Si diodes.

BTW, the SHO section diodes are certainly Si.

I used 1n914 but just for the hell of it I might try the 1n34a. Or-m use a spdt to switch betwen the two assuming it makes any audible difference. Great effect when used with another effect such as a fuzz face.

ok- per Mr Vex himself on his website I found this:
Quotea pair of back-to-back germanium diodes to the output in order to fuzz out the taller direct guitar waves and make them about the same size as the crossover distortion triangles.

So for those who thought it was germanium-YOU WERE CORRECT.
