i have a friend that wants me to make a kill box. i have made these before and i have only made them with locking swicthes (click on click off) but he wants a momentary swicth. their are about three or four at the shack but they dont have normaly open or normaly closed on them. does any one know what part number a normaly closed one it, or what the look diffrence might be? i bought one and it was closed when pushed in. i need the opposite.

out sleve--------------------------------------------in sleve
                   top prong to in tip
                              =
                  bottom prong to in sleve
---------- wire
= swicth prongs

You want one that's normally open, so the one that's closed when engaged is the right one. Wire up the jacks normally, output tip to input tip, output sleeve to input sleeve. Then, connect a wire from the tip (hot signal) of one of the jacks (doesn't matter which one) to one lug of the switch. Connect the other lug to ground. When the switch is engaged, the hot signal going to the switch will be connected to the ground, killing the signal. When not engaged, since its normally open, the hot signal won't be going to ground.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I put a kill switch in my Telecaster using a SPDT switch.

Signal (from volume pot) to the middle lug.

Left hand Side lug goes through to the jack socket, Right Hand Side lug goes through a small resistor to ground.

Not sure why I put a resistor there - probably to avoid a straight short (and maybe some 'hum' issues).

Either way, it works.

Am now wondering why I put a resistor there... This was years ago before I started DIY-ing, so anything could have happened...

perhaps it was to avoid popping? Though in that case it'd make more sense to have a pulldown on the hot signal. Anyways, I hope it works out.

i just finished buliding it. it has a DPDT and a momentary swicth. the dpdt is for killing the signal for awhile (swicthing guitars) and momentary one is for musical effect (buckethead ect.). the DPDT also has a LED status light but i think you would know when it is off.
P.S. never buy toggle swicthes from radioshack.
