are there still circuits out there that use an LM386 or the JRC/NJM equivalents
without the Ro/Co combo at the output?
(see datasheet: oscillation prevention!)

Purplexied? might just be an inaudible oscillation that makes the effect splatter at the end of the notee.

Those two components can help a lot,
esp. when you don`t know what`s wrong and don`t have access to a scope.
