This has been covered here many times before so do some searching around. The short version is that it is just a set of back to back Schottky diodes.

Yep, one of my friends bought one & had me install it on his guitar. If you squinted real hard & imagined distortion, you could almost hear a faint crackle in the overall tone. Just lovely.

  Or...use an active booster like the rest of us who looked at, or tried the BI.
