Interesting schematics with possibilities for valve effects

A month or two ago I picked up a couple of old radio repair books from a car boot sale and kinda put them on the shelf, but looking through them today I found a remarkably familiar schematic and another one involving the use of a transformer to boost the voltage going to the second half of the tube.  I've scanned in two of the pages but I can scan more if people are interested.  (the books are from the 40's so I dont think any copyright issues should manifest themselves)




The circuits are based on what was standard radio voltages but I hope to have a play with the second circuit and see what happens.   Of course I'll need an AC powersupply cos transformers dont run on DC!
Sticking a tube into a tube screamer to get good sound is about like rubbing yourself all over the weight stacks at the gym to get stronger - R.G.

The transformer is boosting the signal, not the applied voltage.  A DC power supply is fine.  This was a common method of coupling stages together in the early tube years.

They didn't RC coupling in the early days correct? That is why they used the transformer...

Thanks for the correction EH, that makes me a bit more eager to try it.  Kurt, I think the first circuit refers to resistance-capacitance coupling

And if you replace the 2nd tube with speaker, it is what happens in a single ended tube amp.
