Diode in crybaby circuit?

What is the diode for in the GCB95 circuit?  I don't seem to recall seeing it in older wahs or some of the other schematics online.

  Probably for reverse polarity circuit protection, in case the battery touches the wrong way.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
