A "clean" pedal

Having experimented with TS-based circuits recently I'm a bit dirted-out.

I thought it might be interesting instead to do a "clean" pedal. I was thinking that the Muff-style tone control I'd grafted into the TS circuit sounded very nice with the dirt control down to 0, so my initial plan was to remove the clipping diodes, reduce the internal gain of the circuit and work from there. It then occurred to me that back when I used a Roland VG-88 I quite liked having a stuck phaser as a sort of universal tone control. I'm planning on doing the groundwork (mostly) myself, but could anyone give me some pointers on relatively simple phase circuits? Most seem to be LFO driven (no great surprise) so I planned to replace the LFO with a pot wired as a potential divider as a starting off point.

Does this seem an avenue worth exploring?
