I have this schematic in front of me which has an upgrade of attack and decay controls.  drawn by charlie barth mods suggested by rob strand, m hammer, et al

It says that :  gain control(might require output amp for gain recovery)

Has anyone built this as is or did you have to do the above and if you did how did you do this?

Thank you!

Back when, I recall one or two reports that the overall results were unimpressive. But I never tried it myself. Perhaps with some tinkering it could become a performer. As for gain recovery (if necessary), I guess the ide would be to pick your favourite booster and tack it on the end.

I built one of those prototypes and thought it was awesome. Gain recovery was not a problem that I remember. The attack/decay mods were not that noticeable/'significant. The I verified/debugged a layout that Nelson made for the circuit. The result was a great compressor in an OS kind of way - not one of those effects you can really hear, but makes a difference in the feel of a strat/tele sound.

Here's a link to that from a few years ago:

I did some attack/decay mods on a Ross Comp and the results were quite significant, if someone wanted to have a compressor that was more in your face that's the one to go with.

Can you post the schematic you have - I just want to make sure we are talking about the same OS +++ circuit.

Yep that's the exact schematic I worked with.

mojo - were you using this with bass or guitar?

I would like to use this with guitar.

Thanks!

Yep, I was using it with only guitar.

That's really cool that you got good results using this with guitar. Have you ever built a stock OS and made any comparisons between the two. That would be pretty cool, too.

As I recall, one of the ideas behind replacing the stock half-wave rectifier in the original with the full-wave rectifier (that I believe Rob Strand came up with) was to try to optimize the OS for use with bass. I'm not sure it did that. I think the couple of not-so-good reports that I recall were being used with bass, getting some distortion especially on lower notes, IIRC. But my guess is that if it's sounding good for guitar, there could probably be just a few tweaks needed to get equally good performance with bass, maybe.
