I'm putting together a RAT Tube Screamer hybrid and I want to put the low pass filter before the gain stage (opamp).  I have it setup across a 1K resistor than a .1U to ground.  It sounds pretty good to my ears and gives me the frequncy response and sound that I'm looking for.

On almost all the distortion circuits I've seen the low pass RC filter is placed after the gain stage and used as a tone control.  Any RC filtering before the gain staqe are very low values and are intended to take out real high frequencies and radio waves.  I was wondering if anyone knew of any drawbacks or problems this may pose that I'm overlooking?  From what I've seen you loose a little gain this way, but it sounds better to me than when I put it after the gain stage.

Any thoughts? :icon_neutral:

there's nothing wrong with that - you are just changing what frequencies you are clipping. If it sounds good, go with it! Let your ears be the judge. :)
