Need a build suggestion for modern rock.

Hey guys!

I've got a gig coming up next friday, and I just realized I don't have the right equipment for the music I'm playing. I generally do more laid back bluesy stuff, but this gig is more modern rock (think Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

So, I need suggestions for a quick build with that kind of modern crunch sound that you hear on, for example, Foo Fighters' "The Pretender"

Anything?

Thanks a bunch,

Big Muff maybe?

...or a really big booster in front of a valve amp...?

Give the Smash Drive a try, the "Killer" version with tone stack. Very low parts count!

You can push it even more with a booster in front (this is effectively how the Krank Distortus Maximus works).

I was going to suggest the Grace or Big Daddy from ROG. they are a little bit simpler with out the tonestacks.  I guess it depends on the parts and time available.

I'm curious what your current set up includes.  Maybe you could use something to complement what you already have.

Big Muffs are cool but they will not work for what your doing in my opinion.

I'm with the BSIAB if it isn't too much trouble...but either lower the caps to ground at the end from .0022uF to .001uF or lower, and/or remove one altogether, so you can have a nicer range of real edge.  While your add it make the BMP tone stack's cap values to to .002uF and 1uF, and C12 (the cap following the second mu-amp stage) to .1uF out for the easiest way to the fuller bass that you'll probably want given your gig needs...

Otherwise....not the best, but it could work---Red Llama?  Or the ever-useful Rat?

No matter what you build, have fun trying new sounds!
Breadboard it!

BSIAB!  it's the jack of all trades  ;D

That's my vote.  Probably the best sounding, most versatile, hard/heavy-ish DIY distortion around.

If you asked "Suggest tires for my Oval track race car:
  I'd want to ask:
How heavy is the car ?
How powerful is it's motor ?
  What is the Wheelbase ?
How does the suspension feel now ?
  ..and assume..
There will be a lot of braking and left hand turns involved.
That you've run 'it' [the amp, guitar, speakers, effects] around the track a few times already and know some of the important input for deciding on what might make it more optimized for the application.
BSIAB does seem to get good reviews, it has a nice range of controls, produces copious amounts of 'internal' distortion, boosts..etc.

I too like the big daddy and/or the bsiab2.
