I wonder what the knob to the left of the black and white one does in figure 38. I'm afraid to touch it!! I'd spend way too much time twiddling knobs instead of playing. Imagine Frampton bringing that out on stage and saying "Good time, good time, good time." through it.

As fascinating as this antiquated tech is, there was actually speech synthesis (attempts anyway) that predates electronic processing:

I have always wanted to hear the mechanical reproduction of the vocal tract, complete with lips and tongue. I imagine this being one of the most bizarre and creepy sounds ever.
