If I'm not mistaken the guitar sound of the blue album was all about the mesa mark II.  Cranked.  I think they used it for everything.  You could try out the 'Uno' project at Run Off Groove, which is based on the mesa mark I, which is pretty similar.

Oh, I guess I was mistaken- that article says it was a Mark I.  Huh.  Well, try the Uno!

When your life is over, will any of this STUFF really matter?

MikeH

Yeah Rats can be chunky, but only if you don't cook them long enough and use the right food processor attachment

Sorry, that was gross.

I just threw the album on and I think the Violet Ram's Head Big Muff  is my closets pedal to that sound. I play a 65' mustang (so single coils)  and that pedal has great bass, but i wouldn't classify it as chunky. The tone adjustment on that pedal is great I only use it between ten o'clock and two o'clock on the pot, but it has a wide range of super bass to super tinny treble.

my thoughts too!
I always thought that album reminded me of a really good big muff tone with more mids than usual through a big cabinet.

Quotealso i just thought would there be a good single coil sized humbucker anyone could recommend don't know why it didn't dawn on me before

If you want the sound of a single coil, but without the single coil noise, do what I did.  I bought a cheap Mexican made Strat that had a single HB and volume control, no tone.  I replaced the el cheapo HB with a Seymour Duncan HB with 4 conductors, drilled a small hole in the pickguard above the routing cavity, installed a DPDT micro toggle switch so I could toggle between the HB and single coil sounds, and not a bit of single coil noise.  My 17 year old metalhead son likes it so much he plays the HB for rhythm parts and flips to the single coil for leads for the clarity.

Just an idea (not mine, it was in the instructions for the replacement pickup).

thats what i did on my g&l rampage only i didnt use a switch i used a push pull pot because drilling into a rampage would be crazy :icon_razz:

What constitutes Chunk - Crunch - Grind - Bloom - etc.   Compression vs. Distortion ???

Try an EQ before/after whatever distortion you pick.  Tweak the input cap.  Too much bass at input can make for a woolly distortion or almost a fuzz, IMHO.  Too little and it's hard to get Chunk.  Does Chunk require lots of distortion/compression or does that remove too much of the dynamics or percussive effect???  :)

i use my SG into a russian muff and i get the weezer tone pretty spot on. it is geared more toward their later stuff tho, getting more of a "perfect situation" sound, but i use it and it works great 8)

Go with a bridge humbucker + Marshall Shredmaster

Always use earplugs whenever you are in noisy/loud situations.
