Germanium vs, silicon.
Does anyone have any input on this subject? I'm currently using a mini booster which I like. I've also used a MOSFET booster and a Sparkle Boost, of the three I liked the Sparkle Boost the best. I'm currently thinking of building a germanium booster. What kind of sound can I expect from the germanium booster (smoother, dirtier)?

petemoore

Dirtier...and more different from your other boosters than Si.
Can be 'tweeky' and sound best through...
I like to make the input cap larger than .0047uf, and make it selectable, I start with a cap strewn in the wire, and one in a socket, so that a switch can jump one of them and leave the other value [.01uf...?], the smaller value is made by the series capacitors.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Mate, I'm with you on the Sparkle boost. Still my fave.
Built pretty much all of them.

I really like the Stratoblaster for a clean boost.
Germanium...well, try the Creampie by Dragonfly and if you haven't build one the Rangemaster/Java etc they are all dead easy and quick to knock together.
So socket and see!

What do your use the boost for?  Solos or driving your preamp tubes crazy?  Overdriving another pedal?

The Rangemaster style is hardly clean, but can do tons of classic tones by changing the input capacitor.
You want Beano and Mott the Hoople?   Regular flavor
Judas Priest?  Bump it up for more mids
Sabbath?  Big cap for Full range boost
Psychedelic Garage Metal
