I agree, especially because j201's, like many other components are manufactured in the millions, so I doubt they'd have time to check them all.

Actually - they do.

The process used to make J201s is the same used to make J202s, J203s, J204s, PN4302s, PN4303s, PN4304s, 2N3368s, 2N3369s, 2N3370s, 2N3436s, 2N3437s, 2N3438s, 2N3458s, 2N3459s, 2N3460s, 2N4338s, 2N4339s, 2N4340s, and 2N4341s.

All of those part numbers come from the same diffusion mask.

They are all 'NP Process' JFETs out of the ovens. Then they are tested, sorted and only after that are they numbered according to how they tested. That is why JFETs are more expensive than BJTs, yet the part-to-part variation is staggering in comparison.

And any kind of testing isn't about time, it's about cost and what the consumer will be willing to be passed on to him in kind. If you are willing to order enough, and pay what they ask, a semiconductor manufacturer will test and sort to get you whatever you want - for a price.

So yes, they do check them ALL.  ;)
