Hi folks,

I finally finished this pedal many months after I got the PCB from John Lyons. It turned out AWESOME! Thanks to anyone who contributed to this circuit and layout.

Couple of pics

Few notes:

  • Instead of decals I put a transparent laser engraved plexi scratchplate. It's attached to the enclosure with thin stripes of double sided tape on both sides.
  • All fets are J201 and biased close to 4.5V
  • I used 47uF filter caps because I had them around and 2K mid pot.
  • I used #20 teflon wire which is a b*tch to work with in tight space.

Update:

I just tried it with my Ibanez RG Prestige and it may have too, too much gain. With hot-rodder strat style guitar I played for the last two days it's manageable, but with ibby it gets very distorted very fast.
Couple of quick clips with Ibanez -> Boogey -> (Boss DD-20 delay on the second clip) -> Boss Micro-Recorder, only cab sim is ON

It sounds better through real amp, I'll try to record something with that setup.

Congratulations, I really like your work with this pedal.  ;)

Good job on the build, nice sound bytes!  Sounds good!

bancika

thanks guys. I'll probably have to play with some lower gain fets the next weekend. With my hot strat usable gain range goes to 50%, but with ibanez not more than 45% :) Too much gain

I have the same experience with my Dr. Boogie build.  Anything over 50% is just about too saturated.  It still sounds really nice up until that point though so I'm not complaining.  My 5150 head is the same way though.  Anything past 6-7 on the lead pre-gain is just super saturated and loses the crunch.

I really like the topside of your Boogey!  Great job!  But I gotta ask, why did you goop up all that solder on all of the traces, everywhere?  Was the etch that unreliable?

bancika

no really, etch was done by John Lyons and he did a great job. It's just that I noticed that traces started corroding and couldn't find my board protection spray. My iron tip isn't that good for tinning surfaces so it ended up looking a bit ugly. But it should last forever :)

Quoteboard protection spray

See, right there.  You learn something new every day!  I didn't know one needed such a thing.  :)

bancika

yeah, and I was given a great spray that you can apply to the whole board without masking solder pads. You could even solder through it...

nice work bancika!! beautiful finish, very classy!!
question: why the sockets for resistors?
----------------------------------------------------------
Tubes are overrated!!

bancika

thanks :icon_wink:
sockets are there to be able to play with bias. I put the pot in, tune it and replace with the resistor. In case I want to try another FET (which I do) it's easy to swap both resistor and FET with sockets.

Wow talk about timing.  I just happened upon a load of resistor & capacitor sockets!  Would you guys be interested in them if I posted them in the FS forum?

They basically look exactly like the 3 hole sockets in the pics above, but the center hole is missing the pin.  They're EXCELLENT for prototyping & quick mods, especially for caps!  I've always been frustrated doing the "one-tiny-socket-at-a-time" thing like bancika did above, and forget trying to pull that middle pin out when there's 3 sockets.

I'll post pics tonight.  What do you think?

P.S. sorry to steal the thread.   :o :-[

here's another clip, this time with some wah (dunlop q95)

ayayay: that's cool, probably better than individual pins. These look like they're gonna break if I'm not gentle with them...

That sounds as SWEET as it looks.
Excellent in both areas. :icon_mrgreen:
I am gonna have to try one of these pedals now as well, thanx to the sound clips.
I'm no EE or even a tech, just a monkey with a soldering iron that can read, and follow instructions. ;D

what kind of a board protection spray we are talking about? to protect the PCB or enclosure? :-/
P.S. ok...most probably, it's for the PCB. what brands are good for this kind of a job?

it's PCB protection spray and I just found it in my father's workshop :)
This is some yugoslavian brand that I doubt you can find...don't know any "western world" brand..
