Acetone will work, but drys a little too quickly, causing "blushing" which means the end result will be a very dull or "powdery" looking finish.

I've never had this happen. I think you may have found the optimum combination & balance between brands and types because lacquer thinner has a tendency to soften plastics. Good job!

Either way, a good clear coat makes the difference with both techniques.
