measuring gain and what is best

I have 4 ac142 gemaniums. I have never meausered the hfe before and i am getting wildly different results. one tranny reached 390 and moved between that and 280 another reached only 150 and the other two were somewhere inbetween. I know that inconsistency is a feature, but im not sure which is best for which application.

I am currently building a rangemaster so im thinking lower gain, and use the others for a fuzz or somthing.

Or should I just junk them and use silicon

Hi,

I in case you used a regular modern DMM to check their Hfe - have alook at what RG has to say on the subject. As for using Si trannies instead - I say - just build both...and then mix
