I've been looking for sound clips for a long time but I can't find any for the Metal Simplex.  I'm planning on making a new stompbox, and I'm really interested in this piece.

Also, does anyone here recommend the Thor by ROG?

Thanks in advance  :D

Do you like Marshalls? In which case yea the Thor is pretty good, chuggy yet crunchy distortion.

Metal Simplex... i'd like to hear sounds samples myself, if it's anything like the bazz fuss is to simplicity to good fuzz... then it should be nice.

I can tell you that it's not a fuzzy or buzzy sounding pedal. It's not super high gain, but it has what I feel are some nice & fat tones with humbuckers. I added a tone control to mine. It's a very simple circuit - why not just build it real quick and take it for a test drive?  :icon_wink:

i breadboarded one a long time ago..had a 80's hair band kinda tone. sounded nice, low parts.
homegrown, family raised couch potatoes. temperament unsurpassed.

I was going to link that at first, but I don't think that has a real good soundclip of it. It can do a lot more than what you hear on there. And it sounds a lot better when someone who knows how to play uses it...  :icon_lol:

Hence the reason yours truly didn't submit one...  :icon_eek:

Thanks guys!  I think I might build on soon, right now I'm struggling getting my AP summer assignment done in time...  I've been waaaaay to distracted with guitar stuff this summer, do you DIYers get the same?

This is how distracted I am, I bought a Jem style body, veneered it, color stained it, sprayed it on got this:

And then the story ends with me getting a B+ in health class, which is ridiculous cuz you learn nothing....

Well, if you're saying you DON'T know how to play, then I'm really in trouble because your leads wipe the floor with mine!   :icon_cry:

Well, gee thanks.  :icon_razz:

Seriously, when I recorded those soundclips my playing was like at an all time low because I hardly played at all. I was building stuff non-stop instead of being a guitarist.  :icon_redface:

I'm leading towards that too, doing way more technical stuff with guitars instead of practicing.  But I've played piano for 10 years so that really gave me a boost in music experience.
Btw, I love your site!  I check it out often.

If you guys want to see how I built my guitar, I got a well-trafficked (not really ;D) YouTube channel with only videos of me making stuff.  Haven't posted a video in months and my subscribers and friends keep mailing and commenting me when I have a new video for my guitar.  Well, I'm waiting til the holidays when I get money and continue my build.

And I just got interested in the Dr. Boogey, there's so many things I want to build at once....  :-\

Build the Dr Boogey if you like chuggy distortion, it can be a troublesome build but it's very much worth it in the end, I love mine for distortion, definitley beats the Crappy Marshall JH-1 I sold for the cash to build it.

Sweet, I'll make a Dr. Boogey then.

Would it be fine to use 250k and 25k pots instead of 220k and 22k for treble and mid, based on the schematic?

I need to save money, only got $20 right now... (-.-)

Yeah those values will be fine, a little digression in pedal building is most of the time fine, plus I think those values were chosen as that's what Europe has where as the rest of the world has values like 50k rather than the UK 47k.

okay, I just checked out mouser.com, and they don't have audio taper 250k pots.  Would it be shocking if I use a 250k linear pot for treble?

I haven't used one but i'm sure it'll be okay, I used a 1Meg Audio with some obscure value resistor in parralel to get it close, it works weirdly, but it works, sure you'll be okay, the change may be bunched up at some points of the taper but it'll work.
