Gate/Source resistance = ~12k ?

With the transistor out of the strato-blaster, I get 965k between gate and ground.
With the transistor in I get 11k7 between gate/Gnd, through resistors that = 965k.
How can this possibly make sense ?
I get 0.0v at the gate position socket pin [transistor out], 8.95v battery, or 2.65v with the transistor in.
there's no gate / source connection, the gate goes exactly through a dinky resistor and a huge resistor...the resistive divider seen at the input of the Stratoblaster schematic.
The fact of the low resistance to ground, and the high voltage on the gate compared to when the transistor is out baffles me.
