I'm pretty sure it won't work well on the alloy cast boxes many of us use.

I've dabbled in using spray on photo-resist to etch hammond enclosures.  I haven't gotten it working quite right yet, but once I do I think it will be a pretty easy way to get high quality etching.  The only problem is that the resist is some nasty stuff and I have no place to experiment with it in my small apartment.

I got all the needed chemicals from Philmore.  You just spray the resist onto the surface of the box, put your design on a transparency, expose the box to light, develop the resist and dip the box in the etchant.  Unfortunately just thinking about the chemicals is making me queasy.

Here are the results:

As you can see I didn't put the resist on thick enough and got etching where I don't want any.  Once I figure out the ideal way to apply the resist I should get good looking boxes, and the total outlay for materials was only $10 or $15.
