Recessed knobs in wood box made easy.

  Requires miter saw.
  The box wood came prepared as lengths of 1/4'' [various widths 2'' for the sides] oak boards from hardware store, gorilla glue and just 6 dowels to helps start the top makes construction very solid and pretty easy, many rubber bands do the clamping. Finish Drilling before assembling the box pieces. Sides wrap around the top. Recommend rounding/leveling corners with rasp, 150-sandpaper, sanding sponge, to remove the Gorilla snot that expanded out of the joints. Incredibly strong glue IME.
  The Raco cover plate [cheap/easy] keeps the pots from unscrewing, makes recessed knobs quite easy to do, I used another small plate of aluminum for the jacks.
  Make the wood box top width = Raco cover sized, drill marker holes with small bit through the plate first, then use the plate/template to drill accurate guide holes squarely through the wood top from the inside.
  Pick a center bit size for the knobs you want to recess.

  Since the center bit had it's holes marked perfectly, and now can begin to cut the top holes. It can cut top and inside surface grains before boring the rest of the 'center' wood out, this technique [starting through into both sides of the wood first prevents exit cutting and 'exit splits'] makes very nice, quick, square sided holes.
  Glue stop blocks to the sides, or screw [short screws mind you] the plate in to mount it in place. I like some plate-mount screws around the stompswitch.
  It is what it is ! Recessed knobs, it came out pretty easy and neat this way, I like it much better than trying to get the pots to fit in the wood.
  The other way I recently did is use 3 piece top [wood/metal\wood], a span of Raco metal with knobs/switch in it being the whole recessed middle cross-stripe.
  Anyway, I think it was pretty slick, quick, turned out nice. Thin coat of Helmsman dries nice, quick too.
