About to finish my first true DIY box, but confused about LED's & resistors...

Okay, I'm just about finished with my very first DIY project, a simple A/B Box. I'm using this setup:

What is the purpose of running two different sized resistors to the LED's? (2.2k vs. 10k)

Is it just to keep them the same "brightness" for lack of a better word? Why would it matter if they light independently?

Just curious,

Green LED's are often dimmer than red ones, so they compensated for that with the different resistor values, to get more current running through the green one.  But you are right, they could share a single resistor and still work.

That is just about the cutest diagram.
