The Incident

I'm new here, so I don't know if this is the right place or not, but over this weekend, I was quite bored.. decided I'd try to spice up a dano daddyo that had been collecting dust..

sounds decent stock, but harsh, fizzy and lifeless could be used as well to describe it..

anyhow, I ripped the big guy open and found two of the cheapest looking mini LEDs ever for a clipping section, and a no-name opamp..  so, I went to work, putting in some NOS japanese diodes I had laying around, not exactly sure of the specs, but comparable to 1N34a and 1n4148 diodes.  Sounded better, but still not great.. these two diodes gave the gain a more meaningful sweep, instead of none -> all..

then I remembered the nos JRC4558D I had laying in my parts drawer, so I socketed the IC and popped that little guy in, and man what a difference..

thing sounds huge and organic now, a 30$ pedal that easily rivals all my other boutique gain boxes, sounds like a plexi on steroids now, and definitely well worth the 20 minutes of solder fume rotting my brain glory.
