Hello Again! i have a question regarding in distortion "high gain one" My friend want some distortion for a Cannibal corpse, deicide , Dying fetus kinda a high gain mid scoop thingy.. so i built him a Krank Distortus "he wasnt happy on it even i has booster " now im building him a dirty bomb and add a booster BJT booster to add some gain but still not a deathmetal feel "i once a deathmetal , black metal kid before :D " my concerns is
1.  What distortion can i build to my friend, is the 2 dist ok? or just scoooop much mids?
2. Any booster that has scoop mids?

Thanks A2

I pretty sure most those guys you mention all use amps for their distortion and pedals to boost for leads. Has he tried the Boss Metal Zone (MT-2) before? That's sort of a tried and true classic for metal.

Scruffie

Dr Boogey is the one for High Gain i'd say.

yeah amp is there weapon.. but here in our place we usually gig that has amp on it "we dont bring amps in our gig we usually rent :("
Metalzone not his bet too..

Boogie mmhh its good but he like something compress sounding.. boogie is somewhat open sounding :D but also i ran out of j201:( hahahah need to order bunch of 201 :D

how about booster  ?? suites for deathmetal? maybe gonna go back to KDM and add some scoop mid booster? any ideas? please?

in order to get the same sound you will need a chain of effects not just one.

A DR boogie, with a compressor would do it.. Also add an EQ pedal.

Distortion sounds come from a lot more places than just the distortion, I have a Road King 2 Mesa amp and it is amazing how much different the distortions sound depending on what cabinet I use. I have 2x10 open, 2x10 sealed, 2x12 open and 2x12 sealed.

With the 10" cabs I get a much tighter Lead tone and the sealed has less fizz more tight bottom.
With the 12" open back I have a very open room sound with fizz at high gain
With the 12" sealed I have a really nice Growl Tight Bottom and punchy, it rolls off the top end so its less fizzy sounding.

High gains are really psycho-acoustic effect from person too person due to the complex harmonics and overly compressed sound. one day you like it and the next you wont just based on your mood. The lack of dynamics due to compression is normally overcome with a phase shifter or light slow chorus to thicken the sound up and make it more aurally exiting to the listener. Reverb has a huge effect on likeability also, if you don't have reverb with the highs rolled off you probably wont like the sound imho.

This is one of the reasons High gain sounds so much better from a tube amp, you get 2 clipping stages pre and power that are very sensitive to your attack, this gives you what they call the swirl sound, almost like the amp has somewhat of a vocal quality that typically only the player notices due to its subtle quality. Hence why tone comes from your fingers, your not just playing the guitar, your playing the amp and effects also.

what type of speakers do you have in your cabs?

the Tufnel Pedal has a ridiculous amount of gain (two LM386 in series) and has a bit of a natural mid scoop to it.  Throw on a BMP tone control and it should be good to go.  It's a pretty easy build too, basically two Smash Drives.

Celestion V30's for sealed 12"
Jenson C10Q for open backed 10"
Emenance Legend BP102-4 Base speakers for 10" sealed
Emenance Legend 1058 Guitar speakers for 10" sealed back
Fender (Eminance) pulled out of Ultra Chorus  12" for open back

this is all my 2x cabs I have a few 1x's and 2 4x's also but I only use them when playing with a very specific drummer who plays hard and even harder on a very loud drum kit lmao.

...Cannibal corpse...Dying fetus...

Both of these bands have used the old Ampeg solid-state heads at times (SS-140, VH-140, etc.). When you're using so much distortion, it doesn't matter so much how you clip (diodes, rails, whatever). But what I do remember from a schematic for one of those Ampeg heads was that the bass tone control came before any clipping took place and the mid control was a twin-T notch filter with variable depth.
Bringing you yesterday's technology tomorrow.
