I have aaron nelsons rocket with 2 2n3906 in the first 2 stages and a 2n5089 for the final trannie. this pedal sing with a saturated super dynamic smooth overdrive type sound.
I am now building one for someone else. i put in 2n4401 in the first 2 stages and the distortion is very weak. could it be the trannies or is something else suspect? i made my own layout for this one since i am making a profit from it so i may have botched that up. But it is passing a strong signal. schematic here http://www.diystompboxes.com/pedals/rocket.JPG
PS i probed after the third trannie before the 10k resistor and there was considerably more distortion but not as much as i would expect.

OOPS. 2n3906 should be 2n3904. thats what you get for posting at 1am.
If someone could tell me how to edit the original post i would appreciate it.

Aren't 2n4401s supposed to be low gain transistors?  Low gain would mean low distortion in this application, no?
