Diode Clipping Selector Using Switches

Hi All,

This is probably an easy question.  To keep it simple, lets say i want to wire up 2 SPDT switchs, so that i can switch between four different diodes for clipping.

Would this work, or am i creating a loop in the output part of the circuit?    If yes, is there a way around it?  Should i wire it up differently?

Thanks for any help!

Edit: Of course it won't work.  Theres 2 loops going on here... If anyone knows how or 'if' its possible, your help appreciated...

I'm guessing the black 'to effect' is connected to ground?

What you have there is a bit different than what you want.
In your case, there's always two diodes connected in the circuit, and you can change which ones are.

What it seems you want is to select 4 diodes independently.

You could use the switches that are on-off-on.
You put one switch in the off position, and you change the other between the two diodes, etc.
You could also have both diodes at the same time, like you have now.

Why don't you try using a rotary switch?  Then you can have a switch that switches between several options.  I've even used 6-way rotary switches in pedals before.

SmallBear sells them.  I think they're on page 5 or 6 of their switches.

If somebody makes a mistake, help them understand what went wrong.  Show them how to do it right.  Be helpful.  Don't just say "you're wrong, moron."

The TS9DX uses a 4-position rotary switch to change the drive tone components. I'm sure the same idea could be used to select different clipping diodes.

Hi all,

Thanks for your responses.  Yeah drk, you've got it.  4 diodes independently.  I realised about 5 seconds after i posted that how it OBVIOUSLY wasnt going to work as there are 2 diodes connected at once.

I haven't tried a rotary switch for diodes yet, because im afraid of change, however it seems like the way to go.  Fivesevens circuit looks great for testing purposes too!  I think i'll have to make one up.

I'll give the rotary switch idea a go.  I've seen a circuit diagram around here for this, ill track it down.

Thanks for everyones help!

I just did the same thing in a MXR Distortion + clone.

2 DPDTs switching between .001 and.1 input caps and 1n34a and 1n914 diodes

Ill get some gut shot pics up for you...
