Mark,
Hope you don't mind - your review helped me a ton, as well as many others, so I posted your review at amazon.com with a link back to here, and giving you credit.

Thanks,
Brian

Where did you see RG's, Aron's, and Jack's names? I didn't see it?

They were in MY book...   :(

Hey Mark - I got the book the other day - great read!

They are at the very back, IIRC.

I don't mind you posting it, but given that some content will be of absolutely no use to those NOT visiting this forum, it probably could have benefitted from an edit before submitting.  No great harm done, though.

And just so that we're clear, my own review was certainly not any sort of prioritizing or selective endorsement of the available books.  I just happened to stumble onto it in a retail outlet when I had a gift certificate to spend.  It was either that or the revised Aspen Pittman book, and the Pittman book cost more than my gift certificate was worth.  It's still a decent read, and the sample CD is useful, though I imagine many might find other books more to their liking.

Hope all of them need (and get) a second printing.  The last thing we need is for analogtom to move into a shack with Nick Boscorelli somewhere in the Ozarks and have TWO authors whose permission we need but can't seem to get.

No, no...never meant anything like that. I bumped into this book at a borders book store the other night, and remembered your post here. I plan on getting AM's book as well, I just haven't seen any sales on it yet.. hehe!!!   (nudge, nudge, hint, hint ;) )
I got this book at borders for like $15 or 20, which is discounted, I believe.

Thanks,
Brian

Your own reputation is safe.  I just wanted to make sure that onlookers/lurkers did not construe any sort of implied endorsement or favouritism on my part.  I just assume that other folks, like myself, are often in a hurry and don't read ALL the postings in a thread.

I just bought this book yesterday from a local bookstore. It's pretty cool for what it is. I was wondering, these shematics they show in there, how close are they to being the real schematic? I noticed on the wah wah schematic, it looked pretty close, but with a couple of component values left off...

EDIT: And that CD in the back with sound samples is pretty cool. I have yet to check that out, though.

Mark Hammer

I honestly don't know what the editors were thinking on that one.  The schems are sometimes wrong, or incomplete or simply hiding info.  For instance, have you EVER heard of the delay chip shown (NE577 or whetever it is?).  The supposed schematic for the Dynacomp has only half-wave rectification.  And so on.  I don't have the book in my hands at the moment so I can't quote chapter and verse, but the schem thing was half-assed and exasperating.  Had he shown critical circuit fragments and explained or walked through them, that would have been great, but these are misdirecting figures with no explanation at all.

The CD is decent.  The bypass samples are innovative, and the inclusion of some amplifier reference points is also smart and thoughtful.  After all, shouldn't the benchmark for tremolo pedals be amplifier tremolo, and shouldn't the benchmark for overdrive pedals be an overdriven amp?

Paul Marossy

I think the schematics are just for the "cool factor", as far as I can tell. I'll have to listen to that CD.

Somebody bought me this as a Valentine gift today.
