I'm in need of a .05uF cap. And I found an oddball capacitor in my stash, a big tan-colored ceramic that is labelled :

"50 J" - space between the '0' and 'J'...and then below it
"N80"

I'm not sure if this means .05uF or 50pF.

Anyone have insight?

Thanks in advance,

I believe that you have a 50 pF cap with a 5% tolerance (the letter J designates this).  See this reference:

http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/capacitor/cap_5.html

For caps with two digits the value is in pF.  For three digit codes the third digit is the multiplier.

I have mentioned before that I purchased a capacitor meter here:

for $8.99.  It works great.

Here's another good capacitor reading cheat sheet, (however only starts at 1000pf).  http://www.amplates.com/images/AmplatesCapChart.pdf
