Well where the Phase 90 and 45 are concerned.  A phase 45 is a two stage phaser and a 90 is a four stage phaser.  If you were to build say a Phase 45 and wanted a 90 then you would add two more stages.   The biggest hurdle is matching jfets usually they are 5952's.  Which isn't a problem when using Geofex's jfet matching circuit even if you just bread board it.  The problem is buying enough 5952's to get a matched set of transistors.  Getting four to match is harder than finding two to match although not really too difficult.  Do a search for jfet matching.  Go to Geofex website for the schematic on the jfet matching circuit.
As for the difference in sound BTW the two.  The 45 is more subtle as you'd expect but also smooth and IMO more musical.  The 90 is more lush and stronger phase but if you want that it sounds awesome.
Schematics for both are everywhere.  Check generalguitargadgets.com for the 45 schem.  As for the 90 I'm not sure but do a search I'm sure you'll find both schems easy.
