Building effects from scratch - what resources

Hi Chaps,

I'm interested in learning how audio circuits work and was wondering if anyone knows what sort of books to read to learn about them.

I've had reasonable sucess copying schematics and following vero layouts but I'm interested in trying to build from scratch and also possible ways to modify the circuits to make them sound a bit different.

Any help would be much appreciated!
