i am modding my boss cs-3 and want to upgrade the opamps. can anyone help here. should i replace them all with Brown Burr or am i wasting components?

ayayay!

Personally I think it's unnecessary.  There's a wealth of things you can do to that pedal to make it more quiet and give it character without having to change the OpAmps, but maybe that's just me.  If you use the Burr Brown, you'll need an adapter so your price will go up a tad.  If you really want to, there's nothing wrong with it.

Boss CS-3 uses a THAT 2159 (which, according to http://www.nrgrecording.de/sll1_making_of.html, is the same as the THAT 2150 but only shipped to large companies like Boss and SSL). Which Burr Brown would one use as a replacement, please?

There are three op-amps used in the CS-3.  Of which, two are used in the signal path and one is used for envelope detection.  The two M5218AL SIP op-amps are the ones that are in the signal path.  The 5218AL is a dual op-amp, so the Burr-Brown that would be a good candidate would be the OPA-2134.

The other issue is that the packaging is different.

Something like this would be needed to adapt the different types of packaging:  http://cimarrontechnology.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=34
