I can't find a 9mm 20k log pot, but I can get a 20k W taper or a 25k linear both 9mm. Which should I go with?

depends on the function, I guess.
I find the w taper pots can be a bit wierd around halfway, as the curve kind of levels out around there, with a steep rise and drop on either side, making it hard to get the spot you want.

It's for a mid EQ control, and I ordered a 25k linear. I figured the right value with a funky taper is a little worse than a slightly off value with a linear taper.

could be, you'll just find that going from say 800Hz to 1kHz takes longer than 1kHz to 3kHz, but you can just use your ears.
w taper are probably trickier when dialling in a compression or tempo setting.
