They look like a tunable IF (intermediate frequency) transformer. IF transformers were used in vacuum tube shortwave and ham receivers back in the 50's through the 70's.

it did look and read like it had two separate windings, and magnets. in each there was a leg/terminal that was marked. none of the connections connected to the case.

thanks for filling me in (:    ... it's from a very late 40's australian radio. if anyone can use them let me know, i'd rather they were put to use than sitting with me...
