No offense but you're way off on that one...it's not a good idea IMO to state what you've "heard" about something...better if you have experience with the unit before you potentially deter somebody else away from buidling it that might like it...

The Vox Tonebender was released in 1964 2 years BEFORE the FF's circuit was "borrowed" from the former...it was used by Clapton, Neil Young and the Beatles among many others and if you find some really good germaniums for it, it's a very formidible fuzztone, with more treble than a FF so it cuts alot better in a mix, and is also very tweakable to personal taste like most other fuzzes...originals often fetch over $300 on ebay regularly...

My advice is to build it...:)

Hi,

i own an original (not the Vintage one) the Reissue - that black box.
It sounds not as the FuzzFace. A bit more gritty and has more OutputLevel.
In Front of a slightly overdriven Amp it sounds very creamy.
connectet to a Marshall the typical hendrix character comes true -

My sounding favorite is the Fulltone Soulbender, but with the Tonebender i shot cheap for only 10.- Euro i am satisfied.

Its momentary on my Workbench to be repaired, because the Stompswitch doesnt work anymore.

If you go to build a Germanium Fuzz, i suggest to build a FuzzFace with Hendrix Mod or the 69 Boutique Pedal.. (thats what i would do)

bye

Hello Hello--
The original Vox Tonebender is one of the best fuzzes I've ever used. [or BUILT] .   It is very interactive with the guitar and amp in an organic-type way.......if you are using a Marshall or Vox-type amp [EL-84 tubes]  and yer tone is a little distorted already, the Vox will give you GREAT lead tones [gritty and full at the same time].  I like Fuzz Faces for certain things, but the Vox works better as part of a stage set-up [doesn;t "clutter up" the tone].
I've been working on a silicon Vox-style TB for awhile now...........more news later on that!
[Also, if you want MORE FUZZ, try out a 3-tranny Tonebender MK II circuit.   YIKES!!
