I found things called 'headers' but they seem to have big old plastic bits that would get in my way. I'm looking for something that would be comparable to making your own IC out of a smaller circuit/perf board. Do they exist? Better yet.. do they have name?

Thanks!

You could try cutting a socket with a small saw and soldering wires from the daughter board  into the "female" side of the socket. Then plug them into another socket soldered onto on the "mother board."

There are definitely ones you can buy too, but I can't help you with that one  ;D

There are some low-profile pin headers of the type you describe, and a stompbox is a rather cramped area for making connections.  It is also an adage for many people that silicon doesn't fail but connections do, so keep in mind that connectors need to be cleaned and demated and remated on occasion just to strip any corrosion away.  If you like standard break-away pin headers, everybody and his dog carries them:

You can snap these apart and use the number of connections you want.
