The staples website says it sells the 56lbs/9mil paper.  wonder if that's what they will really send, though? http://www.staples.com/Staples-Photo-Basic-Paper-8-1-2-x-11-Gloss-50-Pack/product_648181?cmArea=SC1:CG10:DP1947:CL142560:SS985863

I haven't tried using transparencies. What kind did you use? Do you have an item number or something, so that I could try the same kind?

Thanks!!

I suggest going to the store to see what is left on the shelves.  Don't trust the website as there are contradictory informations (as indicated in the topic before) .

Ubaid88, what transparency do you use? I have read others that use this, but do not remember anyone saying type?

Thanks
Rob

ubaid88 - I have a couple questions for you, if you don't mind helping.

  • What brand of transparency paper did you use?
  • What brand of toner do you think works well?
  • When you hold your transparency up to the light, could you kind of see through the toner on it (i.e. did it seem thin)?

Bumping this as I'm also very interested in the transparency method.

  • How much heat ?
  • A piece of paper between the iron and transparency I would imagine ?

Sorry guys i didn't checkout this thread lately. Sorry for late reply.

-I don't use any particular brand. Any cheap one should work. I buy things locally. So any brand that is available easily, i use that. I think one used for OHP(over head projector) slides, are available here.
- All laser printer will work, until and unless toner cartridge is refilled. Refilled ones don't work well. Because they don't print in correct resolution. Also they don't adhere well.
-You mean before transferring? Yes. It is not completely transparent but it will some light to pass through it. Better word will be translucent.

-Set your iron's temperature that extend so that it don't melt your transparency. I set it to 4(wool) or 5(cotton).
- No i didn't use any paper or anything in between. You don't need that as long as you are not melting your transparency.

Some extra advice,

-Clean your copper board with acetone/nail polish/thinner or anything similar. This is not necessary but it will help to adhere toner better.
-Apply pressure with iron for 45-60 sec. This is the most important step.

Tell me your result and don't hesitate to ask anything.

I use transparency. And it transfers 100% of the toner.

The result depend on these factor:

Qulity of Toner.(Refilled one doesnot work good).
Surface of Copper
And Heat setting.

Heat setting? You iron a transparency of your PCB layout? Why can't you do the UV exposure method?

Is this the good stuff of the bad stuff?

Is the recommended Kodak professional paper the INKJET stuff which you then laser print onto??

Any other recommends?

That looks like the package, but you have to look at the fine print.  Quote from John in the first post:

QuoteThe old "good" paper is called "Photo Basic Gloss" 9mil thick / 53 lb
The new crap stuff is called "Photo Basic Gloss Paper" 8.2 mil / 56lb
Both are in the red package with the same photo and identical looking text and layout.

Kodak makes a lot of different Professional paper (finishes, weights, etc.).  Can you provide a product number from the package?

Minion

I don"t have a Product number as I ran out .... it is the More expensive stuff that i used and it was For Inkjet but works in Lazer , very Glossy ....

I too ran into the problem of the clear film being left behind on the Staples photo paper.  However, now I am a firm believer in using gloss pages from magazines.  It works great and it definitely doesn't hurt working at a publishing company.  FREE supply of magazines to choose from.

caspercody

Ned,
What magazine have you found to be any better than any other? Is it okay to use color ones, or should they be black and white?

Ned Flanger

I like to use the thicker smoother paper.  We usually put out SIP's "Special Issue Publications" that only come out maybe once every in a while.  We print these on thicker, nicer paper to boost newsstand sales.  I also try to use a page with no pictures just so it is easier to see the print out.  However, color doesn't matter.  The color might transfer with the PCB, but it does not seem to affect the Ferric Chloride.
