I was bored this afternoon and wanted something quick to do - so I figured out who to convert my crusty old DOD FX-56 American Metal into a crusty old Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal. The conversion turned out great and it's a big improvement on the overall usability of the DOD.
Anyone interested in seeing how it's done?

Sure. I have a partly gutted board here from my disassembled FX-59 Thrashmaster, and the board actually says "FX-56" on it, so it would probably work...

How does the HM-2 sound? The Thrashmaster was really bad.

It's a very ugly, solid-state metal distortion. It's great for what it is. Check out old Dismember and Entombed to hear one in action.

D not convert to HM-2. Best way to obtain good sound is to use other op-amps: change op-amp near clipping diodes (U1) to RC4558 by Texas Instruments and the rest (U2,U3) to OPA2134PA. This is the best configuration and I've tried a lot. Another important thing is to replace electrolytic caps to tantalum ones. Third change I've made is to use booster I've soldered after Q4 and before 47nf cap.
Now the sound is incredible. Very good saturated amp-like tone.
