Functional substitue for LM358

Is there a suitable sub for the Lm358 that I could drop into a Small Clone to test if it is the problem or not?

Very true, MXR used this chip in the MXR100 - that I can think of.

When you've looked through as many 2-op-amp LFO diagrams as I have, you quickly realize there are two preferred dual op-amps for that: LM358 and TL022.  You might see a 3403 in there occasionally if it,s a more complex  control-voltage generator, but simple triangle LFO's want a low-current chip to keep the ticking under control.
