I built the ROG professor tweed on vero and all I get is static. I've figured out the problem sort of... I just can't seem to figure out how to fix it. The voltages are as follows for the 2n5457s
D1:4.56 D2: 4.9 d3: 4.56
S1:.494 s2 4.9 S3. 445
G1: .002 G2 5.81 G3: .002
Clearly the problem is with q2 and it's not the transistor as I've swapped them with the same results. Is this just a short? I've gone over the board many times looking for shorts, running a blade down the tracks to remove any shorts and resoldering. There is about 350ohms between Q2 drain and source. What am I missing? Or is there just a short I haven't found yet?
The layout I used is http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2013/03/runoffgroove-professor-tweed.html

I would measure Q2 source resistor, maybe is 15k instead 1.5k.

Ok I will check. I didn't have a 1.5k so I combined 1.2k and 330 ohm, maybe I botched it on one of them.

Your problem is somehow you have 5.81 Volts on the gate of Q2 when you should have 0. My first thought would be to check the trace cut next to the bottom of the 470p cap going to Tone 3, if this wasn't completely cut it would put voltage on the tone and volume pots and therefore on to the gate of Q2. Do you get 0 Volts on the gate of Q2 if you turn the volume pot all the way down, if you don't you might have a more serious problem.

I didn't see anything remaining there but I cleaned it up just in case. I will go try it out. Here is a pic of the board

Ok that didn't fix it. The voltage on the gate of Q2 remains constant when rotating any of the pots

That's weird, what voltages do you measure on lugs 1, 2 and 3 of the volume pot when it's turned all the way anti clockwise?

Luke51411

Master volume or just volume? Also, q2 drain was much more difficult to bias than the others. It was very touchy on the trim pot. I'd move it a tiny bit and it would go from 2.5 to 5.5v I tried two different fets and it was the same. I don't know if this has anything to do with what's going on or not.

Just Volume. Q2 won't bias properly due to the voltage on the gate, you need to fix whatever is causing that first. Out of interest if you remove Q2 and then measure the voltages on the socket what do you get?

Luke51411

Well it appears I have a jumper placed incorrectly. The one in the middle that is supposed to go to the 470p is one row short and is instead going to the Q2 trimmer. I'm gonna guess that's the source of all my problems.

Fixed. Sounds great! Thanks for the help.

This is a great circuit! I tried it with an SHO and lpb1 in front of it and I liked both, now I have to decide what to box it up with.
