im trying (stress on the trying as it is my first pedal) to build this...
http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/Gila_Crisis/Big_Muff/BMP.gif.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1

i need a 4nf cap and a 10nf cap.

i have:
a 4.7nF
a 3.3nF
and two 2.2nF

so my questions are:-

would it be ok to use my 3.3nF for the 4nF cap and then some how make up the 10nF with the other values? if so then how? i have a little space on my vero at the sides if that helps?
would it be better to use a 470pF or a 680pF for the 500pF caps as i dont have any of them either
what direction do i have to do the 1uF caps because i only have 1uF tantalum and 1uF electrolytic caps.

thanks in advance :icon_mrgreen:

There is a software out here on the web called Duncans amp tool tonestack calculator that you can plug in different values and it will show you your frequency curve. As far as cap adding, when combining caps together to get a different value in parallel you add the values. So 10+10 equals 20. When in series (if you have two) it is half. if more than two caps in series you need to use that formula (can not remember it right now). Caps are the opposite of resistors when calculating for series or parallel.

i can use the 3.3nF for the 4nf and then add the 4.7nF and the 2 2.2nF to make 7.7 for the 9.1nF then. hmmm how to do this i have no idea haha i am amazed i got this far. any ideas on the caps polaritys?

thank you

Those caps probably do not have polarity. Usually only Tant, and Electro caps have polarity.

#4
i mean for the 1uF caps C1 C5 C8 and C13 in the vero layout as i only have eletrolyic and tant 1uF caps. i have no idea how i could work out what their polarity would be

caspercody

For C1 + towards the Q1. For c13 + towards Q4. For C5, and C8 I do not know. but they should both be the same way. Try one way, if that does not work try the other way.

thank you, how do you figure out which way the go? wont it blow the caps if they are in the wrong way round?

Sure can. I have all ceramics in my BMP variant.

I do not think you would hurt the caps if you put thim in the wrong way. Those twp spots look to be in the clipping stage of the circuit.
