i think i have heard the term 'rubber cement' used to describe the glue used to hold the rubber pads on wahs, fuzz faces etc? is this the same as the rubber cement i can get at the craft store?

contact cement?

Not sure exactly what is normally used, but if you want permanance and strength, use contact cement.  That's some tough stuff, and good for adhering dissimilar materials to one another.  Rubber cement is not as strong, but will retain flexibility- which is good if you wanna be able to eventually remove whatever you're sticking.  I would probably go with the contact cement, FWIW. ;)

I believe contact cement, possibly industrial strenght. The stuff used to hold your shoes together... ask your shoe repairman.

I'm guessing that on the Boss pedals, it comes pre-coated with adhesive and all they have to do it pull off the backing and stick it to the bottom plate.

It seems to be similar to whatever adhesive they use on those rubber feet, those super sticky 3M types. I suppose the industrial strength 3M contact cement might do the job.

my shoe repairman closed shop. he started a new business making wooden wagon wheels.

Contact cement is what most places use.
Put it on both surfaces, wait till it's almost
dry and stick 'em together. Voila!
You can double it up or put it on thick
for heavier duty applications, wah treads etc.

I've never had very good success with contact cement. Whatever I try to glue on just slides around and doesn't adhere that well. For that reason, I use super glue for this sort of thing.

Have had good luck with Goop. You can get this at the hardware store. There are a few varieties. I use the purple one.

Did you read the directions?
Both pieces should be glued, let cure, then put together.
The way the glue works is by contact once the solvents have
evaporated. Not slippery at all at this point.

The main attribute to contact cement is it's flexible
and part to part contact with a somewhat dry bond
application. A lot Tolex on amps and of course shoes etc etc.

Of course I read the directions.  :icon_wink: Maybe I am not using the right stuff. Or it was always too hot here when I tried using the stuff (as in 115 deg F outdside). The temperaturte seems to affect the outcome. If it's too hot when you apply it, it seems to stay gummy for a long time. I dunno.  :icon_confused:

What about a double sided tape. This stuff is used to attach a workpiece to the faceplate for turning on a wood lathe so it's gotta' be pretty tough. http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=49224&cat=1,110,43466

The super heavy duty double sided tape is VERY sticky stuff. I use it for various things, works great.

I want to glue tolex onto a stompbox (a hammond size B), inspired by John Lyons´ Snake Skin Pedals...

What´s the best glue for that? Contact cement as well?

@John (if you read this...): How do you cut the tolex into the correct shape? Do you use a template?

Mark Hammer

What holds the rubber down?  The man, baby.  It's always the man.

And of course, that would explan why people are always eager to "stick it to the man", because "the man" is hands down the best adhesive around.

davent

I'm pretty sure John used epoxy on those pedals.
