Orange squeezer in mixer insert

I built orange squeezer with a boost circuit in front of it to get extra oomph! out of it. Works fine with guitar.
I tried it in my mixer channel insert point, and got a really faint and distorted sound. I'm guessing an impedance/line level problem here.
Line level is distorting the input stage, and the output stage isn't creating enough output volume to compensate...? Or what?
Any advice on fixing this?

It'd seem I'm on topic when saying I experienced the exact same thing into AW16G, it doesn't like guitar input at all either.
So I put a Fetzer where that was and it records great too.
I didn't even try to figure out the output impedance of the comp, it worked fine [OS's are hard to tell if they work fine, but good solid boost/touch of comp]..resolved to put a buffer there ['next time'] and see if that fixes it.

I'll be back, a track I wanna rerec will get an OS>Fetzer attempt, more news soon.

Only circumstantial, no research other than:
With the Fetzer the input sounds good.
With the guitar the input sounds weak.
With the OS the mixer input sounds wierd/weak.
With the OS>Fetzer the mixer input sounds fine, like with Fetzer only, of course I did trim the OS volume feeding the Jfet input.
The OS doesn't seem to like unattenuated HB input though, spitzy-crackly [HF tkkks], until I back the volume off at the guitar.

Move the boost to the output, and attenuate the input with a pot set up as a volume control.  Orange squeezer at its best is a noisy circuit though.  An optical compressor like the DOD 280 would be quieter, or one based on a compressor on a chip, like the Q&D.

The boost in the front is for extra compression, but I guess I could try without it, because the line level should be hot enought to squeeze out some enough comp.
I know optical comps would be useful (I have two, the Flatline and EHX Black finger), but the OSQueezer compression character would be perfect for kick drum.

Yes, I'm trying to use this for studio applications and maybe live drums, not guitar.
Next thing I'll do is to try to attenuate the input and mayde use a buffer there, the bypass the boost circuit, we'll see.
