I'd like to put a volume control on a GGG Green Ringer

I recently built a Green Ringer from GGG, and it sounds pretty interesting. However, I've noticed that it seems to make my signal louder, and I'd like to add a volume control to bring it down a bit. (I'm running it after a Ross compressor clone).

Could I replace the 47k resistor at the end of the circuit (R12, here: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_gro_lo.pdf) with a 50k log pot? I searched the archives, but I'm still unclear if it would work.

Thanks for reading.

Absolutely.

You could make it an internal 50K trim pot, because I'm guessing once you got the volume set how you want it, you wouldn't want to change it.  Unlike distortion, which compresses the dynamics of a guitar, which causes constant fiddling with the volume knob, the GR has the same dynamics as what you put into it (it just flips the bottom half of the waveform to the top, a "full wave rectifier"), so the effect volume relative to the input won't change, depending on what you put in or how hard you play the strings that day.

that's what I was thinkin. A trimmer at the output. Every green ringer Ive built since the first has had an extra switch to turn on a bass fuzz either before or after it. It's such a simple add on. Turns it into an octavia fuzz really easily. I used trim pots for the volume of the bass fuzzes too.

Mine has a little 1-transistor booster as a front end to provide different degrees of "push".  Naturally, to compensate, I have to do exactly what is described: replace the 47k output resistor with a 50k pot.  Works great and allows for different tones while providing effect/bypass volume balance.  I recommend it, in fact.

keep in mind the original Dan Armstrong boxes were designed to stack over top of each other, so they tended not to have any controls sticking out.

Thanks, everyone. I think I'll go with the trimpot, as Processaurus suggested.

Just finished a Green Ringer and a Fuzz Face (which goes before the Green Ringer). I ran into the same volume problem. Gonna try the R12 50k pot mod (pot mod?  ;D). Thanks for sharing!!
