Most versatile compressor build

That's very practical advice, and I do appreciate it. I have actually used compressors many times, but never found one to be useful. I think it's because so many of them try to be transparent/subtle. I don't like subtle. So I'm more interested in a comp that I can set to do weird stuff, like leave my attacks alone completely and then clamp down mercilessly on everything else, so I get percussive attacks with lots of sustain. And slow-attack effects, etc.

Well of course that would be because for many years the principal users of compressors and limiters were broadcast people who were simply trying to make their broadcast equipment behave itself without disturbing the properties of the original program material too much.
