green russian big muff noise/low signal output

Hi, I just got my hands on a green russian sovtek big muff. After fixing a broken battery connector, I tried it out, and there was a ton of noise (even when bypassed) and very low signal output even with all controls maxed. I plan on opening the box up in the next week and checking it.

If this problem sounds familiar to anybody, I would much appreciate info on potential causes and fixes.

An update: I opened the box, and checked all solder connections and ground wiring (i think). I could not find any obvious problems. I know that the box I have has been opened once to fix the sleeve connection to the circuit board (leading to the negative battery connection) on the input jack. It seems that there is about 500ohms of resistance between any two ground connections, and about 700ohms between the input/output sleeve and the case.

Also, there is no output when bypassed (or a very low output that is drowned out by noise)

EDIT: I am also looking for a schematic of the original, including the non-true bypass (not the tonepad one with true bypass)

  Yep, the debugging page describes how to make it work, debugging that is.
  Fixing the thing is just a matter of narrowing it down to a problem, then finding and implimenting a solution.

  If the DMM or meter commonly reads within this range when testing for connection, it is probably meter deflection reading of meter.
Also, there is no output when bypassed (or a very low output that is drowned out by noise)
  Is there a ground connection between any signal paths and ground ?

  Knowing even the # of lugs on the switch might bring up the old 3 lug bypass system, IIRC the effect input [or output] is hardwired to the circuit, adding to the input loading.
